For a moment, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 satellite out of Vandenberg SFB, CA, looked like it was headed for the Moon.

Hooray, so cool you caught this, Janis! It flies by so fast after launch it’s easy to miss. I have a couple of great shots from 2018 around Christmas when we were visiting SD.
I remember the great pic you got! I have the Space Launch Schedule app installed on my phone and it alerted me to this launch. Next time (scheduled for this Sunday), I hope to have a better camera ready… but, as they say, the best camera is the one you have available. 🙂
Those are awesome images of it Janis!! How cool to see that.
It was very cool! I hope to see a few more but we’ll see if we remain in the flight path.
Those are awesome images of it, Janis! It must have been really exciting to see.
It was amazing! And at our angle, it felt like we could see it moving for a long time.
Very cool! Did you wave? 🙂
Haha! I should have. Too busy taking pictures.
Very cool photo, Janis. Well, captured and you’re right the camera you have at hand is the best.
We are quite a bit south of the launch site but, for whatever reason, we were in the flight path. It was exciting to watch.
Awesome picture Janis!
Thanks. A bit blurry but a fun reminder of an amazing sight.
Talk about being at the right place and the right time – wow! At first I thought you saw more in Roswell, NM than the little martian man you posed next to on the bench.
Hahahaha! I wonder if any of those little green men hitched a ride?
oooh….nice one with the moon!
The satellite looked like it was headed straight for it. 🙂
Wow! Impressive that you got the shot. I’d have been standing there watching in awe, never thinking about a camera.
We were lucky that we had a decent amount of time to observe it and take pictures.
Fantastic photos, Janis. I’m impressed.

It was a pretty amazing experience. I’m glad I got a few photos.
Very cool.
It was!
Wow! Hugely envious. Even if you may not have had your “best” camera to hand, those are hugely atmospheric photos and beautifully composed.
Thank you. I felt pretty lucky that we were able to observe its flight standing on our deck.
Applause on your photography skills. Great catch.
Thank you… but not as much “skill” as lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
Fantastic! Were you able to take your time for just the ‘right’ shot? I’m thinking time was not on your side – did you feel rushed?
All that to say, it looks like this was a mindfully composed ‘natural’ shot. Expertly & finely executed, Janis!
It was weird how we actually had a fair amount of time to watch the flight. I guess we were at a good angle. When it started to head towards the moon, I had to get a picture. 🙂
Awesome photos! We live within two hours of the Florida space center and I have never captured a launch. Good for you!
I have an app (Space Launch Schedule) that alerts me to the launches all over the world, including Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. Of course, the best ones are at night.
Cool!
It was very cool.
Great shot, Janet! Were you the one sending your picture into the TV? It looks just like what they showed.
That wasn’t me but my Facebook feed had several people posting pictures. Some had no idea what it was and were pretty concerned. 🙂
That’s what they said on the news. Disappointed – no aliens, I’m sure.
Very cool! What a sight to see. Thanks for sharing it here.
I felt very lucky to have witnessed it and I thought others might find it interesting too.
It does look pretty cool, Janis. Fabulous shots!
I loved how my app alerted me to the launch, and I was able to walk outside and see it.
Fabulous photos, Janis. I remember Terri publishing some on her blog and explaining what it actually was. I bet a lot of people thought it was an UFO, though. I know I would have. It must have been amazing to see.
Yes, without knowing what it was, I’d be pretty concerned too. I remember seeing Terri’s shots too and hoping that I would be able to observe a launch for myself. Now, I want to see more of them!
They are both fabulous, Janis! And I, too, wonder, Hugh, especially in the olden days, what kind of stories would be spread by folks gazing up in the sky and seeing this amazing sight…. And maybe not just in the olden days?
I imagine things like eclipses, meteors, and falling stars would have been a bit scary. Of course, these images are of satellites being launched from Earth so they wouldn’t have occurred in the super olden days. Even so, I still see people posting on the local neighborhood sites asking what the heck is in the sky. 🙂
Remember how the eclipse was used as proof of grand magical powers in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court? And how in Norse mythology, Loki supposedly created giant wolf-creature that swallowed up the sun, which clearly explains eclipses? 🤪
The truth is out there!
Well, when you figure it out, let me know. 🙂
When I figure it out, I’m writing a book!
What an amazing photo!
Thanks, it was fun to watch.
Those Space X launches have made for some crazy sights around here!
Have you seen them too? The next, if it goes off as planned, will be at 8:45 this Sunday night.
Ah, good to know! Thank you.
Did you see it last night (Sunday)? It was another fabulous show!
I had forgotten about it and missed it! But a friend posted pics on Facebook, at least.
I’m lame.
Amazing….. right place at right time!!!
We were very lucky to be able to witness the flight from our deck.
Wow, very cool! You captured some great images. I’ve never seen anything other than a satellite…or maybe it was a UFO, haha. Sometimes I think about all the stuff circling around our planet that we’ve launched into space and then I have to stop thinking about it because it’s SO WEIRD. 😳
When I downloaded the launch app, I was amazed – and a bit concerned – at how many of these satellites are being sent into orbit every week. It is weird and I can’t imagine that there won’t be unintended consequences at some point.
Nice captures, they are moving so quickly and are out of sight before you know it.
I was surprised how much time we had to watch it travel across the sky. I guess they go into a low orbit so the trajectory is more horizontal than a rocket ship would be. It was so much fun to watch.
Beyond amazing photos, Janis! Wonderful idea to have the app installed. Around here, people talk about the ISS (International Space Station). I also agree with the comments about the camera you have available. 💕 Erica
Hi Erica! We missed out on the Northern Lights display recently and just saw a portion of the eclipse, so I was thrilled to be able to witness the launch from home. According to the app, there will be another launch tonight. Fingers crossed. 🙂
Whoa. Beautiful!
Thank you! We had another one last night… and more to come in July. They are amazing to witness.
These are really great images!
Thank you… it was an amazing sight!
