Little fish eating stuff off a bigger fish is my guess.
Almost… see my comment below.
Snorkling? We so enjoyed seeing fish doing that. They are gorgeous.
The fish are African cichlids. Fortunately, I wasn’t inside the aquarium.
The penny has dropped.
Recycling.
Hahaha! Good one!
Cool shot with the aquamarine colors, Janis! Hmmm, perhaps rocky coral surrounded by fish or a large sea creature getting cleaned up by the smaller fish! Love it!
Almost… see my comment below.
A manatee being groomed by small fish?
Not a manatee, but good guess. Learn what the creature was in my comment below.
At first I thought they were next to a rock. Are you going to tell us what that big gray creature is? I liked Deb’s guess of manatee.
Not a manatee. The answer is in my comment below. You can visit it at the SD Zoo.
Hippo! Why didn’t I think of that? Very cool. Thanks for the fun science lesson, Janis! 🙂
Please say they aren’t eating off of someone’s leg…!
Yikes, no! See what it is in my answer below.
Are those the fish that remove dead skin?
Yes, they are removing dead skin… but who’s dead skin? See the answer in my comment below.
I thought at first it looked like human skin — a hand in an aquarium, perhaps. But looking closer, I think the manatee guess is a good one.
Not a manatee. See below for the answer.
Oh fun! I never would have guessed hippo!
Wow, you his the turquoise jackpot, with this one, Janis.
Thank you, Marsha! I’m glad I had the opportunity to share this interesting photo.
🙂 Me, too! 🙂
You certainly got the blue fish in for Terri’s Challenge Janis. The gray looks a little like Petoskey stone which you can find in Michigan and people polish it up to make beautiful paperweights or jewelry. The gray stone, upon polishing, turns brown with spots. But I’m guessing it might be an underwater creature that is sleeping and the fish are investigating?
That sounds like an interesting stone. The creature is partially underwater, but it isn’t an underwater creature. See the answer in my comment below.
Michigan is known for those Petoskey stones. Well I’d never have figured it was a hippo and I’m glad you had plenty of glass between you and it as they are very dangerous. I was at the Toledo Zoo years ago and the hippo had its own building/living quarters. It was walking around and suddenly plopped into the water sending water flying everywhere – everyone jumped back but we still got drenched. They had bars around his “swimming pool”.
Yes, as “cute” as they are, I felt better being behind a very thick plate of glass… and we didn’t get wet!
Thank goodness for that!
A shark of some type?
Maybe a little less dangerous than a shark, but I am glad that I was safely on the outside looking in. See the answer in my comment below.
Whoops, I didn’t read that sentence under the image. It’s an aquarium 😊
Yes, definitely an aquarium. I wouldn’t want to get too close to the large gray creature.
Interesting photo.
Thank you!
That shape looks very familiar. Hmmm…Could it be a Manatee? You nailed the Sunday Stills challenge with just one image. Well done.
Not a manatee… which seems like a very popular guess. See what it is in my comment below.
I have no idea!
If you want to find out, the answer is in my comment below.
My first thought was same as Deborah (Circadian Reflections)…fish on top of fish…great photo, Janis!
Not a big fish, but good guess. The answer is in my comment below.
Symbiotic relationship, I think…as a Dental Hygienist patients loved to tell me about the tiny fish that dare to go inside a shark’s mouth to clean teeth and mouth…great photo, Janis 💕
I’ve heard of the fish that clean sharks’ teeth. I imagine a few get swallowed in the process.
I’m guessing fish cleaning another creature…my first thought was a manatee, too!
You are close, but it isn’t a manatee. See blow for the answer.
Great guesses everyone! I took this picture at the Zoo. It is of a hippo getting a “spa treatment” by cichlids. The African cichlids feed on the dead skin of the hippo and the hippo gets clean… a win-win for both!
Very cool! I never would have guessed that!
My first thought was a rock, then I liked the Manatee suggestion, but I’m now going with rock but in the form of a statue. Just to be different.
Haha! Good guess. See my comment for the answer.
I would never have thought hippo!
I tried to figure out how to add a photo to my comment with the answer. I also got a picture of the hippo’s head above the water. He looked happy, like he was enjoying his spa treatment.
Oh, bless! I don’t have that skillset either, Janis, though I have seen it done 🤗🩵
Good one, Janis, the hippo was not even on my underwater radar. Last time I visited the SD Zoo, hippos were not seen in clear water–just mud holes or cement ponds 🙂
I really liked how we were able to see what was going on below the water line…. who knew?
I’d never have guessed it was a hippo, Janis. It does look like human skin, and I have seen those places where you can put your feet in the water, and the fish eat the dead skin. They were quite popular, but I no longer see them on the high street anymore. I guess they lost their interest.
I find nature so interesting… the fish get fed while the hippos get needed grooming.
Fabulous photo! I would never have guessed hippo, but as soon as you know, it’s absolutely a duh moment 🙂
The hippo (whose head was visible above the water) looked absolutely blissed out.
I think I would have guessed hippo anyway, but that’s easy for me to say as I already saw the answer while scrolling through the comments.
You would have won the (nonexistent) prize if you had guessed correctly.
Too late to guess, but I would never have got hippo! Re your comment to Jo about adding photos to comments, I have done that occasionally and I think what I did was add the photo to the media library, then I copied the resulting url into the comment.
Thank you, Anabel. I’ll try that sometime. I’ve seen others do it too so I know it’s possible.
Pretty photo, but no idea what it is. 🤷♀️
It’s a hippo getting a “spa treatment” from some fish. The Zoo had a really nice aquarium set up so we could not only see the hippo’s head above water but also what was going on below.
Cool!
looks like little fish cleaning up a huge fish.
Close… little fish cleaning up a hippo.
That explains the hairs….I couldn’t quite figure those out.
You must be on a blog writing break. I hope Story Chat didn’t wear you out! You did such a great job. I love reading your posts.
Haha, not an official break. I’ll be back. 🙂
Yay!
